Visual Space Optimization for Zero-shot Learning

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Zero-shot learning, which aims to recognize new categories that are not included in the training set, has gained popularity owing to its potential ability in the real-word applications. Zero-shot learning models rely on learning an embedding space, where both semantic descriptions of classes and visual features of instances can be embedded for nearest neighbor search. Recently, most of the existing works consider the visual space formulated by deep visual features as an ideal choice of the embedding space. However, the discrete distribution of instances in the visual space makes the data structure unremarkable. We argue that optimizing the visual space is crucial as it allows semantic vectors to be embedded into the visual space more effectively. In this work, we propose two strategies to accomplish this purpose. One is the visual prototype based method, which learns a visual prototype for each visual class, so that, in the visual space, a class can be represented by a prototype feature instead of a series of discrete visual features. The other is to optimize the visual feature structure in an intermediate embedding space, and in this method we successfully devise a multilayer perceptron framework based algorithm that is able to learn the common intermediate embedding space and meanwhile to make the visual data structure more distinctive. Through extensive experimental evaluation on four benchmark datasets, we demonstrate that optimizing visual space is beneficial for zero-shot learning. Besides, the proposed prototype based method achieves the new state-of-the-art performance.

MSA2-Net: Utilizing Self-Adaptive Convolution Module to Extract Multi-Scale Information in Medical Image Segmentation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

The nnUNet segmentation framework adeptly adjusts most hyperparameters in training scripts automatically, but it overlooks the tuning of internal hyperparameters within the segmentation network itself, which constrains the model's ability to generalize. Addressing this limitation, this study presents a novel Self-Adaptive Convolution Module that dynamically adjusts the size of the convolution kernels depending on the unique fingerprints of different datasets. This adjustment enables the MSA2-Net, when equipped with this module, to proficiently capture both global and local features within the feature maps. Self-Adaptive Convolution Module is strategically integrated into two key components of the MSA2-Net: the Multi-Scale Convolution Bridge and the Multi-Scale Amalgamation Decoder. In the MSConvBridge, the module enhances the ability to refine outputs from various stages of the CSWin Transformer during the skip connections, effectively eliminating redundant data that could potentially impair the decoder's performance. Simultaneously, the MSADecoder, utilizing the module, excels in capturing detailed information of organs varying in size during the decoding phase. This capability ensures that the decoder's output closely reproduces the intricate details within the feature maps, thus yielding highly accurate segmentation images. MSA2-Net, bolstered by this advanced architecture, has demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving Dice coefficient scores of 86.49\%, 92.56\%, 93.37\%, and 92.98\% on the Synapse, ACDC, Kvasir, and Skin Lesion Segmentation (ISIC2017) datasets, respectively. This underscores MSA2-Net's robustness and precision in medical image segmentation tasks across various datasets.

FGO-SLAM: Enhancing Gaussian SLAM with Globally Consistent Opacity Radiance Field

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Visual SLAM has regained attention due to its ability to provide perceptual capabilities and simulation test data for Embodied AI. However, traditional SLAM methods struggle to meet the demands of high-quality scene reconstruction, and Gaussian SLAM systems, despite their rapid rendering and high-quality mapping capabilities, lack effective pose optimization methods and face challenges in geometric reconstruction. To address these issues, we introduce FGO-SLAM, a Gaussian SLAM system that employs an opacity radiance field as the scene representation to enhance geometric mapping performance. After initial pose estimation, we apply global adjustment to optimize camera poses and sparse point cloud, ensuring robust tracking of our approach. Additionally, we maintain a globally consistent opacity radiance field based on 3D Gaussians and introduce depth distortion and normal consistency terms to refine the scene representation. Furthermore, after constructing tetrahedral grids, we identify level sets to directly extract surfaces from 3D Gaussians. Results across various real-world and large-scale synthetic datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art tracking accuracy and mapping performance.

A biological vision inspired framework for machine perception of abutting grating illusory contours

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Higher levels of machine intelligence demand alignment with human perception and cognition. Deep neural networks (DNN) dominated machine intelligence have demonstrated exceptional performance across various real-world tasks. Nevertheless, recent evidence suggests that DNNs fail to perceive illusory contours like the abutting grating, a discrepancy that misaligns with human perception patterns. Departing from previous works, we propose a novel deep network called illusory contour perception network (ICPNet) inspired by the circuits of the visual cortex. In ICPNet, a multi-scale feature projection (MFP) module is designed to extract multi-scale representations. To boost the interaction between feedforward and feedback features, a feature interaction attention module (FIAM) is introduced. Moreover, drawing inspiration from the shape bias observed in human perception, an edge detection task conducted via the edge fusion module (EFM) injects shape constraints that guide the network to concentrate on the foreground. We assess our method on the existing AG-MNIST test set and the AG-Fashion-MNIST test sets constructed by this work. Comprehensive experimental results reveal that ICPNet is significantly more sensitive to abutting grating illusory contours than state-of-the-art models, with notable improvements in top-1 accuracy across various subsets. This work is expected to make a step towards human-level intelligence for DNN-based models.

Aerial Path Online Planning for Urban Scene Updation

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We present the first scene-update aerial path planning algorithm specifically designed for detecting and updating change areas in urban environments. While existing methods for large-scale 3D urban scene reconstruction focus on achieving high accuracy and completeness, they are inefficient for scenarios requiring periodic updates, as they often re-explore and reconstruct entire scenes, wasting significant time and resources on unchanged areas. To address this limitation, our method leverages prior reconstructions and change probability statistics to guide UAVs in detecting and focusing on areas likely to have changed. Our approach introduces a novel changeability heuristic to evaluate the likelihood of changes, driving the planning of two flight paths: a prior path informed by static priors and a dynamic real-time path that adapts to newly detected changes. The framework integrates surface sampling and candidate view generation strategies, ensuring efficient coverage of change areas with minimal redundancy. Extensive experiments on real-world urban datasets demonstrate that our method significantly reduces flight time and computational overhead, while maintaining high-quality updates comparable to full-scene re-exploration and reconstruction. These contributions pave the way for efficient, scalable, and adaptive UAV-based scene updates in complex urban environments.

Music-Driven Legged Robots: Synchronized Walking to Rhythmic Beats

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

We address the challenge of effectively controlling the locomotion of legged robots by incorporating precise frequency and phase characteristics, which is often ignored in locomotion policies that do not account for the periodic nature of walking. We propose a hierarchical architecture that integrates a low-level phase tracker, oscillators, and a high-level phase modulator. This controller allows quadruped robots to walk in a natural manner that is synchronized with external musical rhythms. Our method generates diverse gaits across different frequencies and achieves real-time synchronization with music in the physical world. This research establishes a foundational framework for enabling real-time execution of accurate rhythmic motions in legged robots. Video is available at website: https://music-walker.github.io/.

Joint Automatic Speech Recognition And Structure Learning For Better Speech Understanding

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Spoken language understanding (SLU) is a structure prediction task in the field of speech. Recently, many works on SLU that treat it as a sequence-to-sequence task have achieved great success. However, This method is not suitable for simultaneous speech recognition and understanding. In this paper, we propose a joint speech recognition and structure learning framework (JSRSL), an end-to-end SLU model based on span, which can accurately transcribe speech and extract structured content simultaneously. We conduct experiments on name entity recognition and intent classification using the Chinese dataset AISHELL-NER and the English dataset SLURP. The results show that our proposed method not only outperforms the traditional sequence-to-sequence method in both transcription and extraction capabilities but also achieves state-of-the-art performance on the two datasets.

Learning thin deformable object manipulation with a multi-sensory integrated soft hand

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Robotic manipulation has made significant advancements, with systems demonstrating high precision and repeatability. However, this remarkable precision often fails to translate into efficient manipulation of thin deformable objects. Current robotic systems lack imprecise dexterity, the ability to perform dexterous manipulation through robust and adaptive behaviors that do not rely on precise control. This paper explores the singulation and grasping of thin, deformable objects. Here, we propose a novel solution that incorporates passive compliance, touch, and proprioception into thin, deformable object manipulation. Our system employs a soft, underactuated hand that provides passive compliance, facilitating adaptive and gentle interactions to dexterously manipulate deformable objects without requiring precise control. The tactile and force/torque sensors equipped on the hand, along with a depth camera, gather sensory data required for manipulation via the proposed slip module. The manipulation policies are learned directly from raw sensory data via model-free reinforcement learning, bypassing explicit environmental and object modeling. We implement a hierarchical double-loop learning process to enhance learning efficiency by decoupling the action space. Our method was deployed on real-world robots and trained in a self-supervised manner. The resulting policy was tested on a variety of challenging tasks that were beyond the capabilities of prior studies, ranging from displaying suit fabric like a salesperson to turning pages of sheet music for violinists.

Scholarly Wikidata: Population and Exploration of Conference Data in Wikidata using LLMs

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Several initiatives have been undertaken to conceptually model the domain of scholarly data using ontologies and to create respective Knowledge Graphs. Yet, the full potential seems unleashed, as automated means for automatic population of said ontologies are lacking, and respective initiatives from the Semantic Web community are not necessarily connected: we propose to make scholarly data more sustainably accessible by leveraging Wikidata's infrastructure and automating its population in a sustainable manner through LLMs by tapping into unstructured sources like conference Web sites and proceedings texts as well as already existing structured conference datasets. While an initial analysis shows that Semantic Web conferences are only minimally represented in Wikidata, we argue that our methodology can help to populate, evolve and maintain scholarly data as a community within Wikidata. Our main contributions include (a) an analysis of ontologies for representing scholarly data to identify gaps and relevant entities/properties in Wikidata, (b) semi-automated extraction -- requiring (minimal) manual validation -- of conference metadata (e.g., acceptance rates, organizer roles, programme committee members, best paper awards, keynotes, and sponsors) from websites and proceedings texts using LLMs. Finally, we discuss (c) extensions to visualization tools in the Wikidata context for data exploration of the generated scholarly data. Our study focuses on data from 105 Semantic Web-related conferences and extends/adds more than 6000 entities in Wikidata. It is important to note that the method can be more generally applicable beyond Semantic Web-related conferences for enhancing Wikidata's utility as a comprehensive scholarly resource. AdvDiffuser: Generating Adversarial Safety-Critical Driving Scenarios via Guided Diffusion

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

Safety-critical scenarios are infrequent in natural driving environments but hold significant importance for the training and testing of autonomous driving systems. The prevailing approach involves generating safety-critical scenarios automatically in simulation by introducing adversarial adjustments to natural environments. These adjustments are often tailored to specific tested systems, thereby disregarding their transferability across different systems. In this paper, we propose AdvDiffuser, an adversarial framework for generating safety-critical driving scenarios through guided diffusion. By incorporating a diffusion model to capture plausible collective behaviors of background vehicles and a lightweight guide model to effectively handle adversarial scenarios, AdvDiffuser facilitates transferability. Experimental results on the nuScenes dataset demonstrate that AdvDiffuser, trained on offline driving logs, can be applied to various tested systems with minimal warm-up episode data and outperform other existing methods in terms of realism, diversity, and adversarial performance.
